Neither Scott McLaughlin nor Shane van Gisbergen could manage to secure pole position for Race 31 of the Newcastle 500 as David Reynolds recorded the quickest lap of the Top 10 Shootout.
McLaughlin, who only needs to finish sixth to ensure he wins a maiden Supercars championship, fell 0.02secs short of Reynolds when he was the last man out while van Gisbergen will begin the race on the second row of the grid in third.
Van Gisbergen needs overhaul McLaughlin’s 53-point after his 25-second penalty cost him victory on Saturday but now he will need to get past Reynolds as well – someone who won’t be easy to pass given the pair’s history.
Garth Tander put in a fine performance after coming out as first runner. He held the fastest lap time until Reynolds came out on track meaning he will start alongside SVG in fourth on the grid.
Lee Holdsworth continued his fine weekend to start in fifth but last year’s champion Jamie Whincup could only manage seventh after a mistake going into turn one.
McLaughlin’s teammate Fabian Coulthard will start from 10th after his team did a remarkable job to even get the No.12 car ready for Sunday’s racing given the crash he suffered on Saturday.
All eyes will now turn to the 95 laps of Race 31 and McLaughlin, despite being in a perfect position, knows all too well that the championship can be lost from more advantageous places that this.
