Usman Khawaja posted scores of 41 and 18 in this week’s Sheffield Shield hitout, and is fit and raring to go against India after recovering from a knee injury.
But Matthew Hayden has cautioned former opening partner Justin Langer against having Khawaja open the batting in the first Test, saying he should be permanently moved into first drop.
“I like Usman at three. Traditionally I think your best player bats at three and I think Usman Khawaja is that player,” said Hayden, per the Sydney Morning Herald.
“Why he’s not playing in our one-day side and even our T20 side, I’m not sure.”
Langer has revealed he likes the ‘nice synergy’ between Aaron Finch and Khawaja when they opened together against Pakistan, but is tossing up bringing in Victorian Marcus Harris to open.
More to come.
