ST Kilda defender Nathan Brown has been reported for an ugly, late bump on Essendon’s Adam Saad.
The Essendon defender had handballed the ball when Brown hit him late, with Saad clearly not braced for contact.
Saad was taken off the field on a stretcher and did not return to the game due to concussion.
The Bombers were already a man down after veteran Brendon Goddard limped off with a suspected knee injury.
While Brown didn’t get Saad high — with his concussion seemingly caused by whiplash before he hit the ground — the late timing of the bump could prove costly.
“Brown’s taken four steps after Saad has gotten rid of the ball,” North Melbourne great Wayne Carey said on Channel 7.
“I agree that the bump itself is shoulder to shoulder but the player not expecting it and that late — he’s got to be in a lot of trouble.”
The bump has reignited the discussion around a potential red card system in the AFL.
“I’ve been against the send-off rule but I reckon it’s worth having a conversation about it,” Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling said on Channel 7.
